The Green Valley Cayon

Cayon lies in the beautiful Green Valley in the parish of St. Mary’s, five miles outside the capital city of Basseterre on the eastern side of the island of S. Kitts. In 2008, UNESCO designated the area as the St. Mary’s Biosphere Reserve due to its diverse natural and historical resources, which need to be protected and managed for the overall sustainable development of the community.

The name Cayon tells us of its origin as a French territory during the French and the English’s joint occupation of St. Kitts in 1628. It is this exciting history and heritage that gave rise to several places of interest showcasing sites just waiting for an adventure.

Natural and Historical Sites

1.        The Cayon River marked the dividing line between the English and French lands during their joint occupation of St. Kitts in 1628.

2.        Gun Hill was used as a signal outpost with a battery of cannons to warn the French forces protecting its territory.

3.        Cunningham’s Estate was the home of the famous enslaved African Markus “King of the woods” who with a small band of enslaved workers led a rebellion against the plantocracy after running away from the plantation.

4.        Spooners Ginnery was built in 1767 to produce cotton for export to supply raw materials for the textile industries of England.

5.        Greenhill Sugar Estate site marks the site of the first black ownership of a sugar estate plantation in St. Kitts and perhaps the Caribbean.

What makes it even more unique is that the estate was operated and managed by a black woman named Ms. Lamberts.

6.        The Hermitage Sugar Estate site was the location of a monastery for French Capuchin Monks during the French occupation of the island.

7.        Maroon Lookout is an area found at the top of Whites Mountain where Markus and his band of enslaved maroons settled after they escaped from Cunningham’s Sugar Plantation shortly before emancipation.

8.        Jack In the Box that dirt road track connecting Bareford Farm and Green Hill Estate according to oral traditional sources is a site where enslaved Africans launched ambush attacks on the plantocracy.

9.        Thunder Rock is a site located at the bottom of a very steep cliff sloping treacherously down to the sea. Oral Tradition has it that during the days of slavery, a great tragedy involved the death of a planter and two enslaved workers.

10.        The Green Valley Rain Forest Reserve is that large tract of mountainous land extending from Ottley’s Mountain to Greenhill Mountain which provides a habitat for a rich biodiversity and ecosystem.
